Charity Wye Duck Race 2008

  1. The event will be organised by members of the Rotary Club of Hereford.
  2. Plastic ducks will be floated down the river. People will be given the opportunity to purchase a Charity Wye Duck Race ticket. Each ticket will cost £2. The reference number on each ticket will be linked with a number marked on each duck. In this way each duck has an 'owner' i.e., the person who gave £2 to the charity for a the ticket linked to that particular duck.
  3. Prizes will be awarded to the ducks that float down the river and reach the finishing point first.
  4. The 'owner' of the duck has nominal ownership of the duck for the duration of the race. The actual ducks remain in the custody of the Rotary Club.
  5. This is an event aimed at raising money for charity. Those buying tickets need to accept that while the organisers will endeavour to ensure a fair race, there are a number of circumstances in which an element of luck will favour a winning duck or adversely effect other ducks. In particular:
    • The organisers will endeavour to place all the ducks in the water at or about the same time and place. However if a duck fails to enter the water appropriately it may have a reduced chance.
    • Ducks may be carried by the current into the bank or another obstruction
    • If a group of ducks arrive at the finish together, it may be necessary to select winners and ignore similarly placed ducks
    • Should there be very little flow on the river or should there be a strong wind the organisers may need to assist some or all of the ducks to proceed to the finish
    • The organisers plan, as far as possible, to use ducks that are of the same size and shape. If however, ducks are different, they may have different characteristics and move at different speeds
    • There may be other unforeseen circumstances
  6. It is the intention to start the race at 1600 hr on Monday 25 August 2008. The race will take place prior to the finals of the Dragon Boat Races. In unforeseen circumstances this time and/or date could be changed.
  7. It is the intention to start the race by launching the ducks from the Hunderton Bridge over the river Wye. The finishing line is intended to be at or near Hereford Rowing Club; the precise position depending on the flow of the river on the day. A device placed across the river by the Fire Service will mark the finish. Again these positions could change for unforeseen reasons.
  8. The organisers may disqualify any duck that is interfered with by anyone, or for any other reason at their discretion.
  9. The organisers will try to contact all winning owners. The names of the winners will be placed on this website, will be submitted to the Hereford Times or can be obtained from the Promoter.
  10. Different coloured ducks will be used for the public ducks and the corporate ducks. It is planned that the £2 ducks will be yellow and £25 ducks green. Ducks can only win prizes in their own category.
  11. Members of Hereford City Rotary Club will make other decisions concerning the race and the dispersal of funds.
  12. While the majority of costs involved in organising this race have been covered by sponsors, the Rotary club reserves the right to deduct expenses prior to passing money to other charities.
  13. The members of the City of Hereford Rotary Club will approve the dispersal of monies raised. The referral to those charities that have been supported recently shown on the tickets and this web-site does not bind the club to provide any funds raised from this event to particular organisations.
  14. Any disputes can be referred to the council of the Rotary Club. Their decisions are final.
  15. The sale of tickets is arranged under the Lotteries and Amusements Act 1976. Hereford City Rotary Club has registered with Herefordshire Council for this event, which will be conducted in accordance with the rules set out by the Council.
